Georgian foreign minister Ilia Darchiasvhili on Friday presented to diplomats the diplomatic award, named after the Georgian writer, public figure and diplomat Sulkhan-Saba Orbeliani, at the event celebrating the annual Diplomat’s Day.

In his address, Darchiashvili congratulated Georgian diplomats and expressed “special gratitude” for their contribution to the country's service and protection of state interests in the international arena “in a very difficult period”, the foreign ministry said.

The foreign minister awarded Merab Antadze, a “famous” Georgian diplomat, researcher at the foreign ministry’s Levan Mikeladze Diplomatic Training and Research Institute, for his contribution to the reconciliation and peaceful conflict resolution since the restoration of Georgia’s independence.

Darchiashvili also handed out the departmental award to an “experienced” diplomat and researcher of the Institute, Mikheil Ukleba, for his “lengthy and fruitful” work in diplomatic service and “significant” contribution to Georgia’s European Union integration process.
Georgia celebrates Diplomat’s Day on November 3, marking the birthday of the historical political figure Sulkhan-Saba Orbeliani, since 2004.
