Georgia’s No. 1 tennis player found “not guilty” of violence against his ex-wife

Tbilisi city court on Friday acquitted Georgia’s top tennis player Nikoloz Basilashvili who was accused of physical and psychological violence against his ex-wife Neli Dorokasvhili.

The court said it had heard the positions of the parties, had evaluated the testimonies of witnesses and video-audio recordings, as well as the evidence obtained by the defence attorney as part of the alternative investigation, including the conclusion of the psychological examination of Basilashvili, according to which the latter “had psychologically suffered” from the actions of Dorokashvili.

The top tennis player was charged with violence against his ex-wife. He was detained on May 20, 2020, after which the court released him on ₾100,000 (about $36,000) bail.
