The Prosecutor's Office of Georgia has released a statement clarifying a "narrowing down" of charges against tennis player Nikoloz Basilashvili, after lawyers on the two sides got involved in a dispute over the meaning of changes on Friday.

The release said the office had amended the charges of domestic assault by Basilashvili on her then-spouse in May this year, to "domestic violence against a family member in presence of a minor".

The statement confirmed the changes were aimed at making the allegation more precise and not more severe, countering a statement by an organisation representing the interests of Neli Dorokashvili, the former spouse of Georgia's leading tennis player.

Earlier on Friday, Partnership for Human Rights had released a statement alleging a more severe charge being brought against Basilashvili, before the athlete's lawyers responded by denying this had been the case.

Dorokashvili alleged domestic violence from Basilashvili on May 21, with the player ranked as World No. 27 arrested the following day. He was released on a 100,000 GEL (about $32,500/€27,600) bail while the investigation on the case is ongoing.
