Deputy interior minister: “all necessary” investigative actions will be conducted over Vake Park tragic incident

“All necessary” expertise, investigative and procedural actions will be conducted on the tragedy and the offenders will be punished with the“ full severity” of the law, Aleksandre Darakhvelidze, the Georgian deputy minister of internal affairs said on Thursday at the briefing regarding an electrocution incident in Tbilisi’s Vake Park recreational area.

Darakhvelidze, on behalf of the ministry, expressed his “deepest sorrow” for the tragic incident that resulted in the death of a 13-year-old girl from injuries and extended his condolences to the family, friends and relatives of the deceased teenager.

In his statement, Darakhvelidze said that upon receiving the notification, representatives of all authorised units had “immediately” arrived at the scene of the incident and had begun appropriate actions, launching an investigation for breach of safety regulations during the placement, design, construction or other works at electric facilities. 

In the course of the ongoing investigative proceedings, the case was re-qualified under article 240 (1) I and II paragraphs of the Criminal Code of Georgia, which implies the breach of safety regulations at electric facilities that resulted in death. The crime is punishable by imprisonment for a term of four to seven years.

He said “active” investigative actions were being carried out at the scene of the incident, at the ministry, as well as at the Levan Samkharauli National Forensics Bureau.

The deputy minister noted that, as part of the investigative actions, several individuals from LTD Green Service Plus and employees of the Tbilisi city hall, as well as the Tbilisi municipal laboratory, were being questioned “at that moment”, while also pointing out that teachers, representatives of the Tbilisi public school N55 were also being interviewed, adding the investigation would inspect the documentation describing the design and construction of works, expert conclusions and acts of acceptance and handover.
