Georgian Education Minister Mikheil Chkhenkeli on Monday opened the Georgian-German Science Bridge conference at Kutaisi International University in the country’s west with discussions on the global challenge of cancer, the Ministry said on Monday.

Commenting on the importance of the GGSB, Chkhenkeli said the event contributed to deepening educational, scientific and cultural relations between the two states through implementation of joint research projects and exchange programmes by Georgian and German students and scientists.

The Minister also noted It was “symbolic” the conference was hosted by Kutaisi International University, which he called a “truly European educational institution”.

Chkhenkeli underlined the importance of the Hadron Therapy Centre, which is being built at the university and set to allow oncology and proton therapy research.

The ultra-modern cyclotrons of the Hadron Therapy Centre have already been installed in the world's leading manufacturer of proton therapy equipment for cancer diseases (IBA) for the scientific research process. It should be noted that one cyclotron will be entirely intended for scientific research in medical and nuclear physics, while the other will be used for cancer treatment. The fact that one cyclotron will be used entirely for research causes special interest from the international scientific community," Chkhenkeli said.
