Vakhtang Gomelauri, the Minister of Internal Affairs of Georgia, inspected the measures being taken against forest fire in central-western Georgia’s Borjomi municipality on Monday.

The Minister said more than 1,200 professionals were using hardware mobilised for combating the fire, noting in case of absence of wind, fire sources would be limited by Tuesday.

Gomelauri said professionals from Internal Affairs, Defence and Environmental Protection ministries were involved in the efforts, with around 120 units of equipment, including heavy hardware and tractors, being employed in laying the road to enable firefighters to reach the sources of fire.

The fire has been localised in the direction of nearby villages, the Minister noted, with vehicle crews mobilised to further prevent it from spreading to populated areas.

Together with Gomelauri, Minister of Defence Juansher Burchuladze and Minister of Environment Protection Otar Shamugia were also present in the municipality to observe the work.

The efforts have been ongoing since first firefighter response teams and a border police helicopter reacted to calls over the fire in a forest near the municipality village of Kvabiskhevi, with the fire raging since Friday.
