Aleksandre Khvtisiashvili, the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Georgia, noted the country’s transit role in his address this week at the United Nations Ministerial International Conference of Landlocked Developing Countries, an event dedicated to the issues of sustainable transport development.
Raising the subject of Georgia’s role for the South Caucasus and Central Asia region, Khvtisiashvili said the country would be a “reliable partner” for landlocked countries and ensure “smooth and fast movement” of goods in the related transit corridors.
The Georgian delegation also held meetings with ministers participating in the event, with a memorandum of cooperation signed between the Maritime Transport Agency of Georgia and the Transport and Communications Agency under the Cabinet of Ministers of Turkmenistan.
Organised by Turkmenistan jointly with the UN and involving ministers and high-ranking officials of about 30 developing countries, the conference saw an address by UN Secretary-General António Guterres addressing the participants via video link.
The initiative of Turkmenistan to hold the forum was enshrined in the relevant UN Resolution adopted in 2021.
