Irakli Kobakhidze, the Chairman of the ruling Georgian Dream party, on Monday said the domestic opposition was “doing everything” to prevent the country from receiving the European Union membership candidate status as it believed the outcome would boost the Government’s position.
In his remarks Kobakhidze stressed that the Georgian authorities would continue to act “responsibly”.
The opposition does not want Georgia to receive the [EU] membership candidate status, this is the starting point of their stance. They are doing everything to sabotage the process related to European integration. This shows their nature”, the GD official said.
They believe that the Government will get a boost by [the country] receiving the membership candidate status, and they are doing everything to prevent this from happening. However, we will, of course, continue to act with our responsibility and this process will continue”, Kobakhidze concluded in his comments.
Speaker of the Georgian Parliament Shalva Papuashvili on July 15 said a part of the domestic opposition was “sabotaging” the process of Georgia fulfilling the 12-point conditions established by the European Union for granting it the membership candidate status.
