Georgia’s Border Police on Tuesday said it had arrested a group of five individuals for an attempt of illegal crossing of the state border in the country’s south-west.
The department said the group had made the attempt to bypass the Vale customs checkpoint on the border in the Samtskhe-Javakheti region.
The arrested include three citizens of Türkiye and two Bangladeshi nationals who were arrested during the attempt to cross the boundary from Türkiye.
Border Police said the offenders were set to face up to five years in prison.
Georgian Border Police arrested two Azerbaijani citizens and seized a package of heroin they were attempting to smuggle across the state boundary, the Ministry of Internal Affairs said on Monday.
Four individuals who helped former Georgian president Mikheil Saakashvili illegally enter the country have been denied bail earlier today by Tbilisi City Court. Saakashvili was arrested in Tbilisi on October 1 after returning from eight years in political exile.
Police have arrested one more individual in connection with the illegal crossing of the national border by former President of Georgia, Mikheil Saakashvili.
Georgia’s border police have detained six foreign citizens for illegal crossing the country’s state border. The Interior Ministry did not identify the detainees but announced two were citizens of Turkey and the remaining four were from Uzbekistan.
The Border Police of the Georgian Interior Ministry on Friday began to install warning signs near Georgian borders to inform individuals and companies over possible breaches of law and prevent violations subject to administrative punishment by the domestic legislation.
Georgia’s Border Police has installed electronic alarm systems and obstacle fences at three locations along the border to improve monitoring of the areas of the state boundary, the Interior Ministry said on Thursday.
Georgian Interior Minister Vakhtang Gomelauri on Tuesday told the Parliament the granting of the NATO Operational Partner status to the country’s Border Police units had been a “major achievement” of the past year.
The Georgian Border Police on Friday arrested three foreign nationals and one Georgian citizen for illegal crossing of the state border with Turkey in the south-west of the country, the state body said.
