Major General Giorgi Matiashvili, the Chief of the Georgian Defence Forces, on Thursday congratulated military professionals on the Day of Injured Servicemembers and awarded them with symbolic gifts and diplomas.
The awards followed sports events dedicated to the date and involving seven types of para sports disciplines throughout the week at the Maro Makashvili Military Servicemember Rehabilitation Centre, located north of capital Tbilisi.
The injured servicemembers participating in the contests tested their abilities in basketball, jogging, shooting, table tennis, para-volleyball, weightlifting and roaming.
The Ministry has celebrated the Day of Injured Servicemembers since the date was initiated by Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili last year.
Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili on Thursday hailed the “outstanding contribution” by the country’s troops in international missions, as the Week of Injured Servicemembers launched at the Maro Makashvili Military Servicemember Rehabilitation Centre north of capital Tbilisi.
The Georgian team returned home from the Invictus Games competition with six medals on their score, marking another successful appearance at the international competition for injured former service personnel of armed forces from around the world.
Georgian military servicemember Aleksi Beruashvili has won two gold medals at the Invictus Games international competition in the Hague after competing in 200 and 1500-metre jogging, Georgian Defence Ministry announced on Monday.
The Georgian military servicemembers finished the Invictus Games in the Hague with a record number of medals in the country’s eight-year competition history. This was another successful appearance at the international competition for injured former service personnel of Georgian armed forces in April 2022. Established by Prince Harry, Duke of Sussex in 2014, the games aim to recognise and support the achievements of service members who have suffered "life-changing injuries, both visible and invisible, while serving their countries." Speaking at the launch of the first venue in 2014, the Prince said that the Games would "demonstrate the power of sport to inspire recovery, support rehabilitation and demonstrate life beyond disability.
Children of Georgian soldiers killed or seriously injured in peacekeeping operations will benefit from tuition grants, the Ministry of Defence said on Wednesday.
