Serhiy Shkarlet, the Minister of Education of Ukraine, on Saturday thanked Georgian authorities for showing “great support” to Ukrainian children stranded in Georgia by the war in their country.

The Georgian Ministry of Education said Shkarlet had stressed the importance of providing access to education for Ukrainian children in Georgia and said supporting the students in “such a difficult situation” was especially important for “every Ukrainian''. He thanked Georgian citizens, calling them  “friends” of Ukraine for their “important and strong support” shown since the outbreak of the conflict.

Ukrainian-language classes were established by the decision of Georgia’s Prime Minister at Tbilisi Public School No. 41 and Batumi Public School No. 20 to enable  Ukrainian students to receive general education in their native language, using the curriculum and textbooks used by Ukrainian-based schools.

The Ministry noted students involved in the classes were provided with necessary textbooks and studied both compulsory and optional subjects in the formal curriculum,  in addition to having classes for Georgian language and literature, and a subject entitled Our Georgia. Additional activities are planned for the pupils in both formal and non-formal education.
