The European Commission has allocated €1 million for a feasibility study on Georgia joining Erasmus+, a European Union programme supporting education, training, youth and sport in Europe.

The Georgian Education Ministry announced the development on Friday, saying the study had begun this month and would be followed by an action plan for required reforms in the Georgian education system to make it compatible with the programme.

Deputy Education Minister Nunu Mitskevich earlier today held an introductory meeting with representatives of the research company commissioned for the study, speaking of internationalisation of higher education and expressing readiness to be “fully involved” in the study process.

She also called the prospect of obtaining an associate country status in the Erasmus+ programme an “important step forward” for Georgia’s European integration, and noted the feasibility study would help the country achieve the goal.

The Ministry said full membership in relevant EU programmes would contribute to the modernisation of the Georgian education system, the training of qualified staff, and the improvement of its educational programmes.

Erasmus+ has a budget of over €26 billion over 2021-2027. The programme places a focus on “social inclusion, the green and digital transitions, and promoting young people’s participation in democratic life,” while offering mobility in higher education, vocational education and training, school education, adult education, youth and sport.
