A total of 13 unregistered sawmills were identified across Georgia in April in cases identified as criminal offences, the Environmental Supervision Department announced on Wednesday.

Most of the cases were revealed in the west of the country, including the Samegrelo-Upper Svaneti region and the Black Sea province of Adjara, where 10 incidents were identified.

Authorities discovered logs of chestnut and alder trees, planks and unmarked logs in their findings.

Two illegal sawmills were identified in the eastern part of the country during the reported period, with one unregistered tape sawmill discovered in the Gldani District of capital Tbilisi.

In recent figures of the Department, 188 cases of illegal logging and timber transportation were identified last month, 14 of which contained elements of criminal offences, with a total of 211 cubic metres of illegally gathered timber seized by the state agency.
