Levan Davitashvili, the Georgian Economy Minister, on Wednesday said the country was part of “all international decisions on the sanctions” imposed by the international community against Russia due to its invasion of Ukraine, and adhered to the agreements with Georgia’s international partners.

Davitashvili said the Government held a “clearest stance” with regard to the conflict in “all international formats”, condemning the Russian aggression and being a “strongest” supporter of Ukraine's territorial integrity.

Georgia clearly adheres to the agreements we have with our [international] partners. Georgia has had the clearest positions in all international formats. Georgia is the strongest supporter of Ukraine's territorial integrity. I declare this with full responsibility,” the Minister said.

Davitashvili also spoke about individual economic sanctions not explicitly imposed by Georgia unilaterally, pointing out that many countries - including NATO member states - did not impose these against Russia either.

[The Georgian Government] has a basis for these decisions. This is due to many factors, and we all understand these factors well - such sanctions from Georgia to the Russian economy can be useless, but quite damaging to the citizens of our country,” he noted.

The official also called “irresponsible and immoral” the claims made by some Ukrainian authorities on Georgia being used to circumvent international sanctions against Russia.

These statements harm Georgia's interests and relations with our [international] partners. Our partners are fully informed that there is no basis for this. The Ministry of Finance has enhanced its monitoring mechanisms, and we share information in all formats with our partners. It is unfortunate that this topic is being speculated on,” he said.

On Monday, following Ukrainian intelligence’s claims about alleged talks between Russia and Georgia over re-export of Russian goods to third countries, Irakli Kobakhidze, the head of the ruling Georgian Dream party, said his Government “would like to ask” Ukrainian authorities to take a “responsible approach” to relations established between the nations.

The claims follow similar comments from some Ukrainian authorities and officials about Georgia being used to circumvent international sanctions placed on Russia for its invasion of Ukraine since the hostilities broke out in February.
