Georgia’s US Embassy rejects “completely false” accusations of Ukrainian legislator about Georgia being used to bypass sanctions on Russia

The Georgian Embassy in Washington on Wednesday said the allegation by Ukrainian lawmaker David Arakhamia that Russian individuals and companies were using entities in Georgia to bypass Western sanctions were “completely false”, Reuters reported.

Arakhamia, Ukraine's chief negotiator with Russia, said a Ukrainian delegation visiting Washington was expected to have meetings in the US Congress, State Department and the Treasury over the issue.

The Georgian Embassy noted in a statement the country was in “full compliance” with restrictions imposed on Russia amid the war in Ukraine.

The Georgian Government and its financial institutions continue to be in close coordination with US and other strategic partners to ensure there are no illegal activities of any sanctioned country, company, or individual in the territory of Georgia”, its statement said.

Georgia had asked Ukrainian officials to provide evidence for similar accusations in the past but has not received any, the statement also stressed.

On May 9, British Ambassador to Georgia Mark Clayton said Georgia was “playing its part” in the package of international sanctions imposed on Russia for its invasion of Ukraine.

Clayton said Georgian state agencies were making efforts to ensure the country would not be used by Russia to avoid the sanctions for its invasion, calling moves by the authorities “rapid”
