Georgian President Salome Zourabichvili has called on “everyone” in the country to unite, making the plea in a briefing over Georgian authorities receiving the questionnaire for European Union membership on Monday.

All forces must be “mobilised” as the EU membership bid is an issue that cannot be resolved by the decisions and efforts of any one group, the President said, calling the push for becoming a member state a “national affair and interest”.

She also called on the traditionally polarised local political spectrum to unite around the EU bud regardless of their attitude to each other, in a continuation of her recent efforts for facilitating national dialogue between political forces.

Receiving the questionnaire is an “extraordinary” new opportunity for which Georgia “should thank” the European Union, its leadership, as well as the European Council and Ukraine, Zourabichvili stated.

Oliver Varhelyi, the European Commissioner for Neighbourhood and Enlargement, handed over the questionnaire to Georgia’s Foreign Minister Ilia Darchiashvili on Monday, in the latest development of the country’s EU membership process.
