A complete renovation of Metekhi Bridge, one of the oldest bridges in Tbilisi, will be launched this month, Tbilisi Mayor Kakha Kaladze announced on Wednesday.
Kaladze noted the traffic in the area would be “partially restricted” due to the revamping project worth two million GEL ($649,380/€594,688) on the bridge built in 1951 but with roots back to the medieval era.
A new asphalt-concrete pavement, renovated sidewalks covered with natural stone tiles, and reinforcement of facades and arches will be completed under the project, the Mayor said.
Additionally, Kaladze revealed the cast iron railings of the bridge would be updated while keeping their original appearance.
After the completion of the works, the Metekhi Bridge will be [a] completely repaired and renovated [structure],” Kaladze added.
The Mayor also acknowledged other bridges in the capital city required renovation.

World Bank will finance the $109 million construction project for a 17-km, four-lane, access-controlled highway in the Eastern Georgia’s winemaking region of Kakheti to facilitate connection between the province and the capital Tbilisi as part of the country’s highway network.
