The Georgian Interior Ministry says that the plans announced by the United National Movement (UNM) opposition party to block roads on both banks of the River Mtkvari in the afternoon is against the law and that the ministry will use the ‘proportional force and act in accordance with the law’ to prevent the violation.

The UNM has been holding rallies for several weeks on, demanding the transfer of former president Mikheil Saakashvili to a civil clinic, his release from prison and annulment of results of recent municipal elections.
UNM head Nika Melia offered the Georgian Dream government yesterday to create a working group to ensure Saakashvili’s transportation to a civil clinic on the 46th day of his hunger strike which would change the opposition’s plans to block the roads.
The ministry says that if the UNM decides to cause the traffic collapse today, the organizers may be sentenced to up to three years in prison.

Saakashvili stated last week that he is ready to stop his hunger strike if he is brought to a civil clinic which will ensure his proper treatment in the post-hunger-strike period.
However, the government says that Saakashvili is receiving all types of medical services in Gldani Prison No.18 hospital, noting that the former president and the UNM made plans to cause unrest if Saakashvili is brought to a civil clinic.
