Number of coronavirus cases exceeds 30,000 in Georgia’s Russia-occupied Abkhazia

A total of 30,198 individuals have been infected with COVID-19 in Georgia’s Russia-occupied Abkhazia region since the spring of 2020, reports RFE/RL.

A new wave of the pandemic started a few weeks ago in Abkhazia. Among the newly infected are also children, report local media outlets.

Abkhazia has reported 226 new cases of coronavirus in the last 24 hours.

The de-facto Prime Minister of Abkhazia, Alexander Ankvab, stated last week that large social gatherings, weddings and other events were being held in the region despite the pandemic, which has resulted in a sharp increase in the number of cases.

A total of 434 individuals have died of coronavirus in Abkhazia since the spring of 2020.

The de facto government of Georgia’s Russia-occupied Tskhinvali region imposed restrictions on October 19 to curb the spread of coronavirus in the region.

Educational institutions, gyms, and children’s entertainment venues will be closed until November 1, while weddings, funerals and other social events have been prohibited until December 1.
