About 300 internally displaced (IDP) families living in state-owned buildings will register the apartments they inhabit at a symbolic price, Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili announced today.

We (the Georgian government) will hand over and legalise real estate for about 300 IDP families at a symbolic price of one GEL,” said Garibashvili.

The internal armed conflicts in Georgia of the 1990’s caused the forced relocation of the Georgian population from Russian-occupied Abkhazia and South Ossetia (Tskhinvali region) after which about 251,000 people became IDPs in the country. The number of IDPs increased by about 26,000 people following the Russian-Georgia war in 2008.

A total of 266 IDP families registered houses on August 18 earlier this year.

More than 1,900 IDP families legalised their real estate last year.

The Georgian government announced in early August that it plans to provide 13,000 IDP families with new homes across the country as part of the four-year plan.

A total of 8,000 apartments will be built in various Georgian cities such as Tbilisi, Zugdidi, Kutaisi and Rustavi.

23,000 IDP families have been provided with new housing from 2013 till today.
