Minister of Health Zurab Azarashvili has expressed his condolences following yesterday’s incident at the former Kartli sanatorium when IDP Zurab Chichoshvili jumped out of his apartment in the building and died yesterday.
“I express condolences to the family of the deceased, this is a terrible incident. From the first day of my appointment, consultations have been ongoing. We have a specific vision and plan on how to provide 13,000 families with housing. Periodically, the IDPs are notified about the status of the process,” said Minister Azarashvili.
Due to the difficult living conditions in the sanatorium, the IDPs residing there have demanded they be given new housing.
Azarashvili says Deputy Health Minister Ilia Gudushauri is working to address the issues faced by residents of the Kartli sanatorium. He is familiar with the situation and has met with IDPs and introduced IDPs residing in the building to the ministry’s action plan.
“One of the priorities of the Ministry of Internally Displaced Persons from the Occupied Territories, Labor, Health and Social Affairs of Georgia is to take care of IDPs and improve their social conditions.
According to the decision of the Ministry of Internally Displaced Persons from the Occupied Territories, Labor, Health and Social Affairs of Georgia, “the IDPs living in the former sanatorium Kartli will receive new housing unconditionally in 2022”, reads the statement.
An investigation has been launched into the incident and the cause of Zurab Chichoshvili's death.
From 2004 to 2012, more than 18,000 IDP families were provided with new housing, while from 2012 until today more than 27,000 IDP families.
According to the ministry, the goal for the next three years is to provide at least 13,000 families with apartments.
