Georgia reports 5,359 new cases of Covid, gov’t hopes restrictions will curb the spread

Georgia has reported 5,359 new cases of coronavirus, 2,726 recoveries and 42 deaths in the past 24 hours.
50,192 remain infected with Covid-19 in Georgia currently.
Georgian health officials say that the ‘situation is alarming,’ but hope that the restrictions imposed starting August 14 will curb the spread.
50,937 tests were conducted around the country in the past 24 hours. 30,325 of the 50,937 tests were rapid tests, while the remaining 20,612 were PCR tests.

The country has had 471,685 cases of coronavirus since February 26, 2020.
9.90 per cent of tested individuals had Covid-19 in the past 14 days.
415,146 of the 471,685 patients have recovered, while 6,321 have died from the virus.

The new 5,359 cases were recorded in:
- Tbilisi - 2,187 cases
- Adjara - 813 cases
- Imereti - 698 cases
- Kvemo Kartli - 270 cases
- Shida Kartli - 307 cases
- Guria - 92 cases
- Samegrelo-Zemo Svaneti - 335 cases
- Kakheti - 332 cases
- Mtskheta-Mtianeti - 148 cases
- Samtskhe-Javakheti - 102 cases
- Racha-Lechkhumi and Kvemo Svaneti - 35 cases

6,635 patients are undergoing treatment in hospitals as of today. 1,327 of the 6,635 patients are in critical condition. 326 of the 1,327 critical patients are on artificial ventilation.
40,148 individuals are undergoing treatment at home.
41,871 individuals are in self isolation.
More than 7,290,000 tests have been conducted in the country so far.
741,353 individuals have been vaccinated in the country so far. 225,053 of the 741,353 individuals have received their both doses of a vaccine.
Georgian President Salome Zurabishvili on the 900th anniversary of the Battle of Didgori where the kingdom of Georgia won over the Great Seljuq Empire stated that today Georgia has a battle with the pandemic, noting that ‘the only key to victory has been and is in our unity.’
The Georgian government has imposed coronavirus restrictions between August 14 and September 4 to curb the spread of coronavirus. The restrictions are as follows: Public transport will not work between August 14 and September 4. Intercity transport will work in a regular manner. The government promises they will ensure regular transportation of people (in Tbilisi, Batumi, Kutaisi and Rustavi) to main hospitals or clinics to receive the coronavirus vaccine.
Wearing facemasks outdoors where at least five people have gathered has become mandatory and holding social events such as weddings, funeral feasts and birthdays are prohibited starting tomorrow in Georgia, representative of the Interagency Coordination Council Giorgi Ghibradze announced earlier today.
Wearing face masks in open public areas will become mandatory around the country starting tomorrow to prevent the further spread of coronavirus, Vice Prime Minister Maia Tskitishvili stated earlier today. If one refuses to wear a face mask in open areas, individuals will be fined 20 GEL. Wearing a face mask was mandatory only in closed public areas up until now. Tskitishvili also said that restaurants around the country will work until 22:00.
Two new mass vaccination centres have opened in Georgia, where people can get vaccination without any prior registration. One vaccination centre was opened at the Mtskheta-Mtianeti regional sports complex, while the other was opened at Georgian Technical University, in the capital city of Tbilisi.
Georgia has reported 5,579 new cases of coronavirus, 1,867 recoveries and 50 deaths in the past 24 hours. In total, 52,580 tests have been conducted around the country of which 33,517 tests were rapid tests, while the remaining 19,063 were PCR tests. Since February 26, 2020 Georgia has had 477,264 cases of coronavirus, 417,013 recoveries and 6,371 deaths.
