Police have detained Elchin Aliyev for killing his ex-wife and father-in-law and wounding two other family members in the Georgian town of Marneuli.
Soon after the crime, relatives of the victims went to Aliyev’s home and attacked his father.
Aliyev’s father with facial bone fractures was transferred to hospital. His health condition is critical for now.
The wounded mother and brother of the murdered woman were also transferred to the hospital. Doctors say their condition is stable for now. They have already been discharged from the hospital.
Elchin Aliyev’s mother told the media that his son divorced his wife a few months ago, though they didn’t have a conflict with each other.
Aliev’s neighbors said that he was drunk when he committed the crime.
Elchin Aliyev will face from 10 to 16 years in jail if convicted.
Later after the crime incidents police also detained two individuals, identified only as T.P. AND i.o., for attacking family members of Aliyev.
A 35-year-old man wounded a patrol police officer called by the man’s wife due to a domestic conflict in the Temka settlement of Tbilisi earlier today.
The Ministry of Internal Affairs of Georgia says that people phone police for family violence cases more frequently than in previous years. The Deputy Interior Minister of Georgia Natia Mezvrishvili said that several police officers have been dismissed for committing domestic violence.
Public Defender Nino Lomjaria has released the report on human rights, which reads that 151 women have been killed on the basis of gender and domestic violence over the past five years in Georgia.
Interior Minister Vakhtang Gomelauri stated that 2020 was a year of ‘sudden and difficult challenges.’ “The ministry had to carry out a range of activities at the same time. We were ensuring order and safety, controlling the state border, fighting with criminal, ensuring the defence of human rights, fighting against fires and natural disasters, ensuring a safe electoral environment, ensuring traffic safety, carrying out infrastructural projects and the instructions of the Government's Coordinating Council against coronavirus round the clock,” Gomelauri said.
