Georgian PM congratulates acting Armenian PM Pashinyan on his party’s victory in elections

Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili has congratulated acting Armenian PM Nikol Pashinyan on his party’s victory in snap parliamentary elections with 54 per cent of votes.

The elections were called to ease the political tension in the country which was sparked by the peace deal Armenia signed with Azerbaijan last year, following the war over the disputed Nagorno-Karabakh region.
According to the deal Armenia was forced to concede large swathes of the mountainous region.
Per the results of Sunday’s snap elections the new parliament will have 107 MPs and three political parties: the ruling Civil Contract Party led by Pashinyan, the Armenia bloc led by second President Robert Kocharyan and the I Have the Honor bloc chaired by opposition Homeland Party leader Artur Vanetsyan, local news agency News.am reports.
The European Union (EU) and MEP Marina Kaljurand have thanked Georgia for its facilitation efforts to release 15 Armenian citizens who were captured last year by Azerbaijan during hostilities over the disputed Nagorno-Karabakh region.
Azerbaijan has released 15 Armenian citizens through the facilitation of Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili and the United States Acting Assistant Secretary for European and Eurasian Affairs Philip Reeker.
Prime Minister of Georgia Irakli Garibashvili is on official visit to Yerevan, with the head of the government and his Armenian counterpart Nikol Pashinyan discussing ties in fields including energy and economy as well as prospects for further cooperation between the countries.
Georgian President Salome Zurabishvili has hosted her Armenian counterpart Armen Sarkissian in Tbilisi earlier today. Zurabishvili said that the EU’s role in peaceful conflict resolution in the Caucasus region and for large-scale infrastructure projects is high.Zurabishvili stated that the region has ‘unique economic potential’ and that ‘increased interest in the region from foreign actors confirms the importance of the region.’
US president Joe Biden has congratulated Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan on victory in the parliamentary elections and stated that Armenian prisoners’ safe return with Georgia’s support after the war with Azerbaijan ‘will be an important basis for further regional cooperation.’ Nikol Pashinyan’s political party Civil Pact won the snap parliamentary elections in Armenia in late June which were scheduled due to the political crisis caused by the war with Azerbaijan.
Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili, who is on a working visit in Yerevan, has discussed bilateral and regional cooperation with his Armenian counterpart Nikol Pashinyan. PM Pashinyan once again offered condolences on the tragic collapse of a residential building in the Georgian Black Sea town of Batumi on October 7 causing the death of nine, as well as expressed his solidarity with the Georgian government and the Georgian people.

The Press office of the Georgian government says Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili will hold a face-to-face meeting with his Armenian colleague in the government administration building, following which a sitting of an intergovernmental economic commission will be held at 14:00.
The eleventh sitting of the Intergovernmental Commission on the Economic Cooperation between Georgia and Armenia was held in Tbilisi today, which was attended by the Prime Ministers of both countries.
