Tbilisi has been named as the 2020 Emerging Culture City in the latest Leading Culture Destinations Awards, an "Oscars for Museums", with the Georgian capital emerging among winners from 50 destinations.

Hosted last week in Berlin, in a change from its usual location in London, the event introduced cultural tourism spots in 28 countries as nominees. Organisers aimed to "shine a light on the most exceptional offerings of the world's existing and emerging" destinations for those interested in cultural discovery.

In the contest, run by LCD and visitBerlin, Tbilisi was picked by the jury team in the Emerging Culture City section, where the capital was nominated along with Marrakech, named the 2020 African Capital of Culture, and the Andalucian port city of Málaga.

Nominees in awards sections were originally selected by LCD ambassadors as well as the organisations research and input from Lord Cultural Resources, a company with a portfolio of cultural projects worldwide since the 1980s. Judges then voted on the shortlist for their winners.

Tbilisi has recently been named one of the three trendiest destinations for 2020 by the European Best Destinations website and selected as the No. 1 city in the Top 10 Major European Cities of the Future pick by the Fdi Intelligence magazine.
