A total of 1,844 senior medical students from various universities have already undergone a one-week training course in order to help Georgian epidemiologists in the fight against the coronavirus.
The Georgian Ministry of Education says the one-week training program includes thematic lectures on coronavirus management, including personal safety of nurses, psychological and social assistance for Covid patients and tools for identifying contacts of newly infected individuals.
Training courses are led by employees of the National Training Centre for Family Medicine of the Health Ministry and the Georgian Red Cross Society.
Employees of the Public Safety Management Centre are also involved in the training programme.
On October 27 Head of Georgia’s National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) Amiran Gakrelidze said the biggest challenge for the Georgian healthcare system is the lack of inpatient beds and medics during the coronavirus pandemic.
Since the beginning of the pandemic 1,678 medics have been infected with COVID-19 in Georgia, of which the majority have already recovered and returned to hospitals to work.
Georgia has reported 1,852 new cases of coronavirus today, of which 650 were registered in the capital city of Tbilisi, 389 in the Black Sea region of Adjara and 441 in the Imereti region.
