Domestic tourism data: number of domestic visits down 37.2% in Georgia

About 596,500 Georgian tourists aged 15 years or more made 675,700 visits (-37.2%) within Georgia in the second quarter of 2020. 

Domestic tourism resumed on June 15 in Georgia after months of lockdown due to the spread of the coronavirus in the country. 

In order to promote domestic tourism the government of Georgia has launched a new state programme 'Travel for Georgia', while the Prime Minister Giorgi Gakharia and other officials have encouraged citizens to travel in Georgia and visit its regions.

The Georgian capital city of Tbilisi was the most visited destination by domestic tourists in Georgia.

Here are top five most visited areas:

  • Tbilisi – 20 per cent of domestic travellers
  • Imereti – 19 per cent
  • Adjara (Black Sea coast) – 11.5 per cent
  • Kakheti – 9.9 per cent
  • Mtskheta-Mtianeti – 9.6 per cent

The top reasons for internal travel were:

  • Visiting friends/relatives – 47.9 per cent
  • Visiting another property [summer cottage, house, etc.] – 17.8 per cent
  • Shopping – 13.9 per cent
  • Health and medical care – 8.9 per cent
  • Holiday/leisure – 5.5 per cent
  • Business or professional – 2.8 per cent
  • Religion/pilgrimage – 1.4 per cent
  • Education/trainings – 0.5 per cent

People aged 31-50 were amongst the most avid domestic travellers (39.1 per cent). 50.5 per cent of visits were made by women, says Geostat.
