US allocates $7mln for a 5-year education project in Georgia

The US Agency for International Development (USAID) has allocated seven million USD for a five-year education project in Georgia, the government of Georgia reports.
The project aims to promote reading books, critical thinking, mathematical thinking and decision-making at Georgian secondary schools, as well to develop a programme for future teachers at higher education institutions and support the studying of the English language.
An agreement regarding the project was signed last summer and it will be carried out by the International Education Centre within the Fulbright programme.
The Georgian government has opened the first ever, modern rehabilitation centre for wounded soldiers in the country with about 4.5 million USD in support from the US. "A state which has 20 per cent of its territories occupied [by Russia] is obliged to care about its soldiers,”Gakharia said, thanking the US for the financial aid, stating that the Georgian government spent one million GEL on the project.
The US Government will allocate funds for two new, “large-scale” projects in Georgia and the donation for both projects will amount to $1.2 million, the government of Georgia press office has reported.The Georgian government says that the US will provide $500,000 to support entrepreneurs in the villages at the occupation line in Georgia and $700,000 for the construction of a children’s hematology-oncology center in Tbilisi.
The US Government has plans to provide $500,000 to fund new enterprises in the Georgian villages along the Russian-occupied territories, the US embassy to Georgia has reported. "Residents along the occupation line need special support,” the embassy said
The construction of the first children’s oncology centre has begun in Tbilisi on the base of the existing Jo Ann medical centre in the Digomi district of Tbilisi, Zurabishvili has stated.
Georgian Foreign Minister David Zalkaliani, who is visiting Vienna as the Chair of the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe, met with OSCE Secretary General Thomas Greminger earlier today. Greminger said after the meeting that there is a close partnership between the OSCE and the CoE in a number of defined areas.
The United States government's Fulbright Student Program in Georgia is set to expand after the Minister of Education, Science, Culture and Sport of Georgia and the US Ambassador in Georgia signed a project to benefit local universities' teaching of English on Tuesday.
Over 2,000 primary schools and 23,000 teachers across Georgia, and their students by extension, will benefit from a USAID Basic Education programme launching with the start of the new academic year in the country.
