US' Fulbright Student Program in Georgia set for expansion

The United States government's Fulbright Student Program in Georgia is set to expand after the Minister of Education, Science, Culture and Sport of Georgia and the US Ambassador in Georgia signed a project to benefit local universities' teaching of English on Tuesday.
Under the English Teaching Assistant programme, set to run at regional universities and led by Fulbright scholars from the US, the project will contribute to an "internationalisation" of the educational institutions, minister Chkhenkeli said following the signing.
The Georgian and US governments will annually co-finance the work of six English language teaching assistants per year over the next five years. Until the new deal the ETA programme had been run by the US embassy in direct work with Georgian universities.
Ambassador Kelly Degnan said the expanded project would see the increased number of English teaching assistants both improve the process of language learning at the universities and introduce culture and values from the States to the institutions.
The Fulbright programme will accept applications from bachelor's and master's degree assistants, with each grant running for a period of nine months starting in September 2021. More details are available on the programme's official website.
The US Agency for International Development (USAID) has allocated seven million USD for a five-year education project in Georgia, the government of Georgia reports.
Over 200 Georgian students will be able to study abroad thanks to the latest round of scholarships supported by the country's International Education Centre this year.
Tamar Gabruashvili, an employee of the Revenue Service of the Georgian Finance Ministry, has been awarded the scholarship of a foundation established by ex US President Barack Obama. Leading US Webster University intends to open its first campus in the region in Georgia, the Georgian Business and Technology University (BTU) has announced earlier today.Webster University will be located on a 2,000 square meter plot of land in central Tbilisi, which also houses the Business and Technology University.The university will have labs, auditoriums a library and work spaces.
Over 2,000 primary schools and 23,000 teachers across Georgia, and their students by extension, will benefit from a USAID Basic Education programme launching with the start of the new academic year in the country.
Strengthening cooperation between Georgian and American universities for increasing dual international degrees of education programmes in Georgia was discussed in a meeting on Monday between Robin Dunnigan, the Ambassador of the United States to Georgia, and Giorgi Amilakhvari, the Georgian Education Minister.
