The Georgian government handed keys to their brand-new flats to 251 internally displaced families on Friday, with Prime Minister Giorgi Gakharia telling reporters the policy of providing benefits to IDPs would continue.

In a celebratory event in Tbilisi on Friday evening, Gakharia and the Minister of Internally Displaced Persons from the Occupied Territories, Labour, Health and Social Affairs of Georgia Ekaterine Tikaradze hosted the families. Ambassador of Germany Hubert Knirsch also joined the occasion.

We have many displaced people who are in need of care from the government [...] These people, who had to leave their houses in the [2008] war, have been without homes since."

We know this [effort] is a drop in the sea, but we need to continue caring about these kids and celebrate days like this one," the PM said at the event.

The IDPs received flats in the "Dirsi settlement" of apartment blocks in Tbilisi, with Gakharia personally handing several families their keys on the eve of the 12th anniversary of the 2008 war, which displaced tens of thousands of citizens from the now-occupied Tskhinvali (South Ossetia) region.

On Friday the government also announced 140 IDP families would receive flats in the resort town of Tskaltubo in Georgia's west. The Municipal Development Fund is also building six more residential bloks in the town where 560 families will receive apartments.
