Georgia among countries with highest incarceration rates in Europe

Georgia has one of the highest incarceration rates in Europe, show annual statistics on prisons by the Council of Europe.

According to the survey (which reflects the situation in prison as of 2019), Georgia counts among countries with the highest incarceration rates (270 inmates per 100,000 inhabitants), along with Russia (386), Turkey (329), Lithuania (232), Azerbaijan (218) and Czech Republic (203),” CoE says.

Georgia was also placed among countries where the incarceration rate grew the most (+7%), along with Turkey (+13%), Cyprus (+11%), Denmark (+9%), Bulgaria (+8%), UK (Scotland (7%), Greece (+6%) and Sweden (+6%).

CoE said that 45 of the 52 prison administrations in the Council of Europe area answered this year’s questionnaire, except prison administrations in Belgium, Bosnia & Herzegovina, Georgia, Malta and Ukraine.
