Georgian amber wines are one step closer to becoming 8th on the International Organisation for Vine and Wine (OIV) list.

The OIV is an intergovernmental organisation of a scientific and technical nature of recognised competence for its works concerning vines, wine, wine-based beverages, table grapes, raisins and other vine-based products.

An OIV meeting held in Paris, France has moved the issue of including wine made by Georgian traditional methods on the list of special wines to the final stage of discussion.

The final decision on the matter will be taken in 2020.

In 2017, the OIV adopted a proposal for an accelerated review of Georgia to consider that wine made by Georgian traditional methods or chacha distillation will be included in the list of OIV special wines.

Currently, the OIV special wine list includes seven wines: sparkling wines, carbonated wines, fortified wines, liqueur wines, sweet wines with residual sugar derived from grapes, ‘icewine’, flor or film wines.
