Georgian pensioners older than 70 years old and who reside in the country’s highland areas will be paid a pension of 263 GEL ($90.41/€81.65) from January 1, 2020 and of 300 GEL ($103.13/€93.14) from July 1, 2020, announced Georgian Prime Minister Giorgi Gakharia at a presentation held on the occasion of International Mountain Day earlier today.

Gakharia said that the Georgian government is carrying out different activities to improve the living conditions of people living in highland areas.

People living in mountainous areas have benefits in paying electricity bills, additional salary benefits for teachers and doctors, and financial assistance for childbirth for up to one year.

The focus on mountainous regions will be doubled…Highland areas need to become sustainable, an economy should emerge there, new companies should be created which will serve the whole country and will have export potential,” said Gakharia.

Gakharia noted that Georgian mountains have a huge potential for tourism. He added that locations like Mestia, Kazbegi, Ushguli and Truso should be seen by not only every Georgian citizen but also by the whole world.
