Regulations on the provision of gas to Georgian consumers will be more stringent, announces Deputy Economy Minister Natia Turnava.

The gasification of [Georgia] is a priority but it should be developed in accordance with safety standards”, Turnava said.

Turnava mentioned last week’s powerful gas explosion in a residential building in Tbilisi’s Didi Digomi district and offered condolences to the family members and relatives of the victims.

She expressed hope that the investigation will determine the cause of the tragedy, but at the same time noted that “we plan to improve gas consumption safety and establish the best international practice in this regard”.

Turnava said that requirements for the construction and installation work by qualified gas companies will be more stringent, in addition to better regulated procedures of connecting residential buildings to the natural gas network.

Turnava added that the population will also be better informed about the safe consumption of natural gas.

Two people died as a result of natural gas intoxication in Varketili district of Tbilisi last night.
