All votes counted: ruling party candiate wins by-elections

The Central Election Commission has counted all the votes cast in the second round of MP by-elections in the Mtsatsminda district of Tbilisi. 

According to the preliminary results, the ruling Georgian Dream party candidate Lado Kakhadze has won the race. 

The results are as follows:

  • Lado Kakhadze – the Georgian Dream party – 61.83 per cent.
  • Shalva Shavgulidze – Free Democrats and the European Georgia – 38.17 per cent.

The ruling Georgian Dream party candidate Lado Kakhadze is leading in the second round of MP by-elections in the Mtsatsminda district of Tbilisi.

Tbilisi Mayor Kakha Kaladze announced the results of some of the polling stations late today. He said that although vote counting is still underway, the Georgian Dream candidate is enjoying an overwhelming victory.

Shavgulidze also admitted at the recent news briefing that he has apparently lost today but he will continue his political path together with his team.

Polls closed at 8 p.m. at 31 polling stations in Georgia where 18,105 voters, accounting for 41.23 per cent of the total number of voters, cast their ballots in today’s runoffs.

The final voter turnout at Mtatsminda district in Tbilisi was 15,049 in the first round of by-elections on May 19, which is 34.27 per cent of eligible voters.
Kakhadze received 41.01 per cent of votes in the first round, while Shavgulidze received 36.84 per cent.

The second round was taking place between the ruling Georgian Dream party candidate Lado Kakhadze and the opposition Free Democrats and the European Georgia nominated Shalva Shavguilidze

Parliamentary elections were held in Georgia in October, 2016, but the seat became vacant after former MP Salome Zurabishvili was elected the country’s fifth President.
