Georgia is working on protecting and improving the quality of Georgian produce and making it more popular by launching a new regulation on ‘Rule for the Use of the Quality Mark’.
The classification level of 11 quality marks are defined:
Protected geographical indication
The name of the protected appellation of origin
- Traditional produce
- Georgian quality
- Grass-fed
- Handmade
- Mountain produce
- Fed in forest (free range)
- Directly pressed juice
- Bio produce
- Bio production transition
After granting the right to use the quality mark, the enterprise and the produce are subject to permanent control in accordance with the monitoring plan. In case of any violation appropriate measures will be taken”, read the press release by the government of Georgia.

Georgia is continuing to crack down on misleading labelling of dairy products. From July 1 food labels such as cheese and butter will only apply to animal milk products.
Strict rules are being introduced in Georgia meaning local producers can no longer label their dairy products with misleading claims such as "with fats similar to cottage cheese” or "with fats similar to sour cream” and so on.
Georgia imported $29.6 million in milk in 2019, show preliminary data from the National Statistics Office of Georgia (Geostat), out of which the import of thickened or sugar added milk amounted to $21.3 million, while the value of sugar-free milk import came to $8.3 million.
Inspection groups from the National Food Agency are inspecting seasonal fruits and vegetables across the country, taking samples from various retail outlets and produce markets to determine the concentration of nitrates in freshly harvested fruits and vegetables.
