Georgia is improving the country’s environment for fair enterprise competition and safeguarding consumers’ rights, while strengthening efficiency in supervision.

Georgia’s Economy Minister Dimitry Kumsishvili today announced that amendments will be made to the consumer product safety code.

The amendments will oblige the state to check whether there is compliance in the labeling of genetically modified products.

In Georgia, all products that contain genetically modified components must have proper labels informing consumers of their contents. A law which forces labelling of genetically modified food products came into play in Georgia on July 1, 2015.

The new law will ensure that products are carefully inspected according to their label.

The law regulates the type of information that must be written on the label. Specifically, if genetically modified components are 0.9 percent more than the product’s total mass, a label stating "GM” must be clearly identified on the top left corner of the product.

The Minister explained that the consumers should know that they buy the product that really contains those materials that are written on its label. This way, the Minister says, the consumers’ rights will be protected and also the producers will have a fair environment for competition.
