How much milk does Georgia import?

Georgia imported $29.6 million in milk in 2019, show preliminary data from the National Statistics Office of Georgia (Geostat), out of which the import of thickened or sugar added milk amounted to $21.3 million, while the value of sugar-free milk import came to $8.3 million.

The share of milk import was only 0.33 per cent of the total imports of Georgia in 2019, show preliminary data, while Geostat reports that Georgia imported $24.8 million worth of milk in 2018 amounting to 0.27 per cent of total imports.

In January-November 2019, Georgia imported 6,514.8 tonnes of sugar-free milk and cream, while the amount of thickened or sugar-added milk and cream was 9,352.5 tonnes.

In January-November 2019, the top three countries from where Georgia imported milk and cream with no sugar were the following:

  • Ukraine - 3,221.5 tonnes
  • Iran - 816.4 tonnes
  • Turkey - 508.2 tonnes

Over the same period of time, the top three countries which exported thickened or sugar-added milk and cream to Georgia were as follows: 

  • Ukraine - 2,446 tonnes
  • Belarus - 2,045.3 tonnes
  • France - 1,238.6 tonnes

How much milk does Georgia produce?

According to Geostat's agricultural survey, households in Georgia produced 555.3 million litres of milk in 2018 which is an increase of 5.1 per cent compared to 2017.

As for milk processed by factories, 7,479.5 tonnes of milk was produced in the first nine months of 2019 worth 15.9 million GEL ($5.5 mln/€5 mln).

Georgia did not export milk with no sugar at all in 2019, while it exported thickened or sugar-added milk worth $767,300 in 2019, show preliminary data.
