Over 75,000 individuals with acute disabilities (also referred as Group II disability) will receive increased social security payments from January 1, 2019, the government of Georgia has reported.
The decision was announced by Georgian PM Mamuka Bakhtadze after his meeting with people suffering from acute disabilities today.
From January 1 of next year, they will receive 120 GEL monthly instead of 100 GEL.
Bakhtadze said that each citizen of the country, including disabled people, is the priority of the government and that is why active work is being led to increase financial support for them and to ensure their full engagement in the social life of the country.
It is very important for us to note that certain resources have been allocated towards this end within the past five to six years. The social security package is also increasing, though we understand that this is not enough and more needs to be done.
It is essential to get exposed to the practices of developed countries and to introduce a European model, thereby increasing the engagement of local authorities in this process to make it more inclusive", Bakhtadze added.
Bakhtadze spoke about the need for the active engagement of disabled people, their employment and participation in arts and sports events.
