The Ministry of Internal Affairs of Georgia has announced that they have detained a suspect who allegedly killed a nine-year-old girl in the eastern Georgian town of Gori yesterday.
The ministry stated today that a 34-year-old man has been detained with a previous crime record for the premeditated murder of a minor in aggravated circumstances.
The ministry did not speak about the injuries on the body of the murdered girl or about the motive of the murder, which has triggered speculations on social networks that the case could have been related to the upcoming presidential elections.
If found guilty, the detainee will be sent to prison for up to 17 years.
The girl went missing yesterday as she did not appear at her music classes after school lessons.
Parents of the minor called police and asked them for help in the search.
The Interior Ministry says that all the apartments on the route the minor allegedly walked were checked and blood was found at one of the flats.
The ministry says that the blood was sent for analysis and the suspect was detained shortly afterward.
Witnesses told the media that the girl’s body was found on the Galustashvili Street in Gori with her hands and legs tied and a plastic bag on her head.
