US Heritage Foundation Researcher: US can help Georgia better implement its peace initiative

Researcher of the US Heritage Foundation Luke Coffey says that the US government can take steps to help the Georgian government carry out its peace initiative ‘A Step Towards a Better Future’, which aims to improve the humanitarian, social and economic conditions of the populations in Georgia’s Russian-occupied regions of Abkhazia and Tskhinvali (South Ossetia).
Coffey says that active support from the US to the initiative will be exemplary for other countries to do the same.
He also stated that President Donald Trump’s administration is supporting Georgia boost its self-defence capabilities and he believes that the US government will stick to the same path.
‘A Step Towards a Better Future’ was initiated by the Georgian government in April 2018 to restore ties with the residents of Georgia’s occupied regions.
The Heritage Foundation is a conservative American public policy think tank based in Washington, D.C.
The EU delegation to Georgia and the German Embassy have applauded the Georgian government’s peace initiative to improve the humanitarian, social and economic conditions of the people in Georgia’s Russian-occupied regions of Abkhazia and Tskhinvali (South Ossetia).
The Government of Georgia has proposed legislative changes for improving the humanitarian, social and economic conditions of the populations in Georgia’s Russian-occupied regions of Abkhazia and Tskhinvali (South Ossetia).
The aim of the initiative is to improve cooperation across the occupation line.
The committee of Ministers' Deputies has assessed the initiative "as a vivid sign of Georgia’s firm commitment to promote confidence and interaction between the societies split by the dividing lines.”
The major topic of discussion at the meeting was the Georgian Government’s peace initiative A Step to a Better Future which seeks to improve the socio-economic conditions of the populations in occupied Regions of Abkhazia and Tskhinvali.
The Georgia and its Neighborhood Conference has been held in the Washington DC yesterday, co-hosted by the Levan Mikeladze Foundation for Caucasus Studies and the Georgian Association in the USA at the Middle East Institute, where foreign experts and diplomats stated that Georgia is moving on the right path.
The US Heritage Foundation has released its report by fellow researcher Alexis Mrachek on the top priorities in the US Georgia relations this year, stating that it will be ‘an important year’ for the relations. The report reads that after 2019 street protests in Tbilisi, the 2020 parliamentary elections in Georgia ‘will likely be tumultuous.’ Mrachek says that Georgia will be faced with ‘multiple challenges this year,’ stating that the fate of the October parliamentary elections and the Anaklia Port project are uncertain.
