The export-import of wheat to and from Georgia will only be possible by rail and ports starting on September 15, 2018, announces Georgia’s Ministry of Finance.

This means that the export-import of wheat by truck will not be possible any more.

Georgia’s Finance Minister Ivane Machavariani explained that the reason behind  this decision was long queues at Larsi customs checkpoint which is the main road used for wheat export-import.

Machavariani said that these queues of vehicles hampered tourists’ arrival to Georgia.

This year there is an unprecedented number of tourists, who cross the border by road as well… there was a crisis created [at Larsi customs checkpoint]. Hundreds of cars had to go back and we lost serious income from tourism. Rus Tourism even warned travelers to avoid travelling to Georgia because of kilometers of queues. In addition, a lot of people recommend their relatives not to go to Georgia. This is why we made a decision to restrict wheat import by trucks”, said Machavariani.
