Georgia is enjoying a record harvest of wheat, rye, barley and other grain, reports Georgia’s Ministry of Agriculture.

The annual grain harvest season is in full swing and already the results are promising.

This year four tonnes of grain was expected to be harvested off each hectare of crops, which was double the amount grown in 2015, said the Ministry.

This year more land was being used to grow grain than in previous years; officials said more than 80,000 hectares of land was being used to grow wheat and more than 40,000 hectares for barley.

This year’s harvest will undergo stringent testing to ensure it is of the highest quality.

The Ministry of Agriculture provided 86 special harvesting machines to farmers in eastern Kakheti and Shida Kartli regions, as these areas were the major producers of grains.

Seventy-one harvesting machines were sent to Kakheti while the remaining 15 were used by farmers in Kvemo Kartli region.

The wet weather has had an impact on the harvest, said the Ministry and as a result, harvesting this year’s crops began slightly later than normal.
