In December 2019, Georgia imported about 30,000 tonnes of wheat from the United States, announced the Georgian Wheat and Bread Producers Association earlier today.
This is the first portion of wheat imported from the USA in the history of independent Georgia,” said head of the association Levan Silagava.
Silagava noted that the import of wheat from the United States is important as the US is a strategic partner for Georgia and it will give Georgia a chance to diversify the market for wheat import and provide food safety in Georgia.
Silagava noted that flour produced from the United States wheat is of a high quality.
Negotiations between Georgia and the US are underway for importing more portions of wheat.
Georgia has depended on Russian wheat for import during recent years.
