The US Embassy to Georgia says in its statement on the 10th anniversary of the Russia-Georgia war that Georgians displaced by the war have never been able to return to their homes, and residents of the occupied territories have been cut off from the country’s remarkable economic and political progress of the past decade.
10 years of occupation is 10 years too long. We will continue to work together with the government and the people of Georgia and with our friends and allies to ensure the world’s continued support for Georgia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity within its internationally recognized borders,” the US embassy stated.
The embassy statement reads that the conflict in 2008 resulted in hundreds of casualties, displaced thousands of civilians from their homes and marked the start of the devastating occupation of 20 percent of Georgia’s territory.
