Minister of Internal Affairs of Georgia Giorgi Gakharia has announced the opening of the new Human Rights Department in his administration in order to timely and effectively address human rights issues.

Gakharia stated that he kept his word about the department made to parliament about a month ago when lawmakers were about to confirm a new Cabinet of Ministers.

The minister stated that without high standards of protection of human rights, even multiple good deeds carried out by law enforcers would not be respected appropriately.

Unfortunately Georgia still faces violence against women, family violence, violence committed by juveniles or crimes committed against minors, as well as various crimes grounded in discrimination. A type of cultural problem still exists in the country in which victims refrain from cooperating with law enforcement.”
The competence of law enforcers is also of high importance, their knowledge and the quality of investigation.
The department has been created to address such issues and challenges,” Gakharia said.

The minister announced that his body has already launched the employment process for the new department based on their qualifications and knowledge.

Gakharia also stated that the Interior Ministry would be ‘two times more demanding” when there will be alleged cases of exceeding authority by police employees.

He also stated that the ministry will not tolerate disrespect towards law enforcement officers.
