The co-rapporteurs of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) for the monitoring of Georgia, Kerstin Lundgren (Sweden, ALDE) and Titus Corlatean (Romania, SOC), strongly condemned the recognition by the Syrian authorities of the Georgian regions of South Ossetia and Abkhazia. "This action by the Syrian authorities, clearly in return for Russia’s military support for the Assad regime, violates fundamental norms principles of international law. We reiterate our full support for Georgia’s territorial integrity and the inviolability of its borders”, reads the statement by the co-rapporteurs released on May 31.
Syria is the fifth country after Russia, Venezuela, Nicaragua and Nauru to recognise the Russian-backed Georgian breakaway territories as independent republics in the wake of the Russia-Georgia 2008 war.PACE Monitors @KerstinLundgren and Titus Corlaţean strongly condemn recognition by Syria of Georgian regions of Abkhazia and South Ossetiahttps://t.co/R1U5qKS1Ijpic.twitter.com/mHvL6gQRHA

The rest of the international community is unanimous in that Abkhazia and South Ossetia are integral parts of Georgia.
