Syria’s recognition of independence of Georgian regions condemned at UN General Assembly

The recognition of the Georgian regions of Abkhazia and Tskhinvali (South Ossetia) as independent countries has been raised and condemned at today’s UN Security Council meeting and at the UN General Assembly.
The UN Security Council meeting was scheduled for regular discussions of Ukrainian issues.
However, the Ukrainian representative raised the Georgian issue and condemned the Syrian act.
Today Crimea is a large military base used by Russia for its interests, in Syria among them. Now we have seen that Syria recognised the Georgian regions as independent republics,” the Ukrainian representative stated.

The representatives of Sweden and the UK also condemned the decision of Syria and emphasised that such solutions acted against international law and order.
"In terms of the news [as to] why Syria has now recognised Abkhazia and South Ossetia, this isn’t a complete surprise to us simply because Bashar al-Assad is propped up by the Russian regime”, the spokesperson of the US State Department Heather Nauert said during a press briefing on May 29.
Syria’s decision will not affect the broad international understanding that South Ossetia and Abkhazia are part of Georgia, reads a statement released by NATO Spokesperson Oana Lungescu.

the British Government reiterates its "full support for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Georgia” and to UN Security Council Resolution 1808 which reaffirms the commitment of all Member States to the sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity of Georgia within its internationally recognised borders.
The Turkish Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Hami Aksoy has condemned the recognition of the Georgian occupied regions of Abkhazia and Tskhinvali (South Ossetia) as independent republics and evaluated the case as a blatant violation of international law.
In its statement the MFA of Finland fully aligns with the EU statement on the establishment of diplomatic relations between Syria and Georgian territories of Abkhazia and South Ossetia currently occupied by Russia.
'Syria's decision to recognise the breakaway regions of Georgia is a violation of international law. Norway will maintain its support for Georgia's sovereignty and territorial integrity,' said the State Secretary at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Norway Audun Halvorsen.
