France and Georgia are launching a high level dialogue format named after Georgian prince Dimitri Amilakhvari, a French military officer and Lieutenant Colonel of the French Foreign Legion who played an important role in the French Resistance against Nazi occupation during the World War II.

As the French Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian said after the meeting with Georgian PM Giorgi Kvirikashvili and Foreign Minister Mikheil Janlidze, the new dialogue format will ensure the two sides can discuss important issues for the bilateral partnership.

French Foreign Minister has been visiting Georgia to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the first Democratic Republic of Georgia on May 26.

"I am very happy to visit Georgia. I would love to stay for some days or come back afterwards. I spent some days here in 2016 when I was the Defense Minister and have very warm memories of this visit. To me it is a great honor to be with the Georgian people during these symbolic days when you celebrate the 100th anniversary of the first Democratic Republic. I told PM Kvirikashvili that even during the hardest times in history France has supported Georgia,” Jean-Yves Le Drian said after the meeting held yesterday confirming the country’s readiness to further support Georgia in terms of territorial integrity and sovereignty.

In this light, he has pointed out that the parties have discussed the possibilities of strengthening cooperation in the defence field.
