US Congress initiates resolution for 100th anniversary of the 1st Republic of Georgia

The US Congress has initiated a resolution dedicated to the 100th anniversary of the First Democratic Republic of Georgia.
The resolution, which was submitted to the Senate on May 24, reiterates the US support to Georgia and condemns the occupation of historic Georgian lands by Russia.
The authors of the resolution are Senators David Perdue, Ben Cardin and Johnny Isakson.
The resolution supports the partnership between Georgia and the US for defence and security and initiates even higher level of cooperation in the fields. The resolution also encourages more intensive trade and commercial ties between the two countries, based on mutual interests,” the Georgian Foreign Ministry reported.
The resolution reaffirms US strong support to Georgia’s NATO membership and praises Georgia’s role for international peace and security,” the ministry said.
The Foreign Ministry stated that the resolution condemns the occupation of Georgian territories by Russia and calls upon the country to withdraw its forces from the Georgian regions of Abkhazia and Tskhinvali (South Ossetia).
The resolution speaks about the severe violation of human rights in and near the occupied territories of Georgia, the ministry stated.
A festive historical reenactment of the proclamation of Georgia’s independence exactly 100 years ago crowned the May 26 Independence Day celebrations in capital Tbilisi today.
The Georgian government has hosted a round table named "Cooperation for welfare – strategy for the next century" which was attended by the presidents of six countries and the President of European Commission Jean-Claude Juncker.
489 recruits have made an oath to serve Georgia today at six different places including Tbilisi, Shindisi, Vardzia, Kojori, Batumi and Kutaisi officially welcomed by the President of Georgia into the country’s armed forces.
Georgia marks the 100th anniversary since the creation First Republic of Georgia today. The Government of Georgia has organized more than 100 events abroad to specially mark the date. More than 100 start-ups, Georgian and international organisations are involved in organising events.
Attended by the Foreign Minister of Georgia Mikheil Janelidze, the President of the Chamber of Representatives of Belgium Siegfried Bracke and Deputy Secretary General of NATO Rose Gottemoeller, the event highlighted Georgia’s European aspirations, values and progress.
The resolution - Affirming United States support to the nations of Ukraine, Georgia, and Moldova in their effort to retain political sovereignty and territorial integrity - has been co-sponsored by eight other congressmen from the Republican and Democratic parties.
The bi-partisan Georgia Support Act has been introduced to US Congress by Co-Chairmen of the Georgia Caucus Congressmen Ted Poe and Gerald Connolly on June 26. The legislation reasserts the United States’ support for Georgia’s sovereignty and opposition to the "forceful and illegal Russian invasion of Abkhazia and Tskhinivali region/South Ossetia."
The US House of Representatives has passed a bill which not only condemns the occupation of Georgian lands but also provides sanctions against those who violate human rights in the two Russian-occupied regions of Georgia – Abkhazia and Tskhinvali (South Ossetia).
First Deputy-Chairperson of the Georgian Parliament Tamar Chugoshvili will visit US with the parliament delegation on January 28.
US Senator David Perdue says support for Georgia’s national interests and security issues will be reflected on a legislative level, namely in the National Defense Authorization Act, which Perdue named as ‘demonstration of the strong bipartisan support Georgia enjoys in US Congress’.
